Minestone is a local term for the accretion of colliery grease, sludge, coal and rock waste that fouled these East Durham beaches for so many years. Blast Beach was entirely covered by a mile-long carapace of minestone several feet thick when I came bicycling here in the s.
Out of Darkness Came Light
These days, a decade and more since the closure of Dawdon Colliery in , the sea has already nibbled the minestone halfway back to the cliffs. We dropped down the slope of the cliff and trudged across the scab of minestone. Lengths of ancient conveyor belt, baulks of timber, bricks and metal bars stuck out of its industrial archaeological layers. Its grassy back was thick with wildflowers. One of the richest growing grounds for wildflowers is magnesian limestone, and half of Britain's share of this uncommon rock is contained in the cliffs of East Durham.
It didn't take long for Niall and me to spot yellow rattle, eyebright, betony and at least four species of orchid in the beach and clifftop grasslands. Flowers attract insects, and insects draw in the birds.

Buzzards and peregrines were hunting the cliffs. Meadow pipits and yellowhammers sang on the scrub bushes. Views from the clifftops are immense - north along a marching line of cliffs to the mouth of the River Wear at Sunderland, south through a great coastal curve to the distant cliff profiles and pale blue hill humps of North Yorkshire.
Soon we were looking down into the tangle of woodland in Hawthorne Dene. The ashes and oaks rang with birdsong: warblers, blackcaps and a trickle of excitement from a well-hidden wren.
On the cliffs beyond, we came to the low herringbone ranks of grey slate roofs and red-brick houses that heralded the former mining village of Easington Colliery. If any ex-mining village epitomises the physical character and the spirit of the East Durham coastal coalfield, it is Easington Colliery. Its neat sister village of Easington, up on the inland ridge, is full of houses that commuters pay through the nose to possess. The pit closed in Unemployment has soared.
Times are extremely hard. But the people remain tough, resilient and determined not to go under. A gaunt memorial, the hollow metal shell of the Easington Colliery pit cage, crowns the green swell of ground where the mine buildings stood. On the shore below, the beach is of pale creamy pebbles on tan sand, backed by dark red and yellow cliffs. I found it impossible to reconcile the beauty of this scene with what I saw here on those student jaunts, more than 30 years before - a blackened shore where a skeletal conveyor gantry vomited mine waste into a filthy, greasy sea.
I remembered the sea-coalers, out there picking small waste coals into plastic sacks to sell for a few pennies around the houses or burn on their own domestic hearths. They're all gone from this coast," Niall said.
In a way they were a sign of the old days. Our biggest challenge, you know, was winning local residents over to what we wanted to do along the coast. But once they saw improvements, they wanted to volunteer help. They put in the paths, cleared the scrub, cleaned up a lot of the mess.

We came within sight of journey's end, the car park at Crimdon. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son,. He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death And broke their bands apart.

But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day would overtake you like a thief;. Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, "I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.
Therefore do not go on passing judgment before the time, but wait until the Lord comes who will both bring to light the things hidden in the darkness and disclose the motives of men's hearts; and then each man's praise will come to him from God. On the other hand, I am writing a new commandment to you, which is true in Him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true Light is already shining. All rights reserved.
