To whom is this precious and exceedingly great promise made? For whom do all things work together for good? These questions are answered and the people described in the same verse - Romans The promise is made to them "that love God" - "to them that are called according to his purpose. Our love for God is connected inseparably with obedience. A part of God's eternal purpose in calling us is that we may be " conformed to the image of his Son " Romans Therefore, it necessarily follows that when we sin we are lacking in our love for God, and are not living according to the purpose for which he called us.

The Lord does not promise to make "all things" work together for our good, while in that condition, because in that state we are not the kind of character to whom the promise is made. The Lord is not for us in our sinning, and many things can be "against us. This should prevent anyone from saying: "If all things work together for our good, then our own sins must do it. He promises to over-rule the sins of the disobedient for the good of those who do love him and live according to his purpose, but does not promise to make anything work for the spiritual good of the disobedient.

In Paul's discussion of the abundance of God's grace, he said, " But where sin abounded, grace did abound more exceedingly " Romans This and other things that he said about the grace, goodness and love of God might cause some to jump to the erroneous conclusion that their own sins would enlarge the grace of God, and therefore, good would come of their evil.

Paul anticipated such false reasoning, and dealt it a death blow in advance. He said, " What shall we say then?

All Things Work Together For Good (1999 Version)

God forbid. We who died to sin, how shall we any longer live therein? He proceeded to tell them they had been baptized to live a new life, and that sin should live no longer therein. He put this emphatic question to them: " Know ye not, that to whom ye present yourselves as servants unto obedience, his servant ye are whom ye obey, whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? Can one yield himself as a servant of unrighteousness and still be the kind of person to whom all things work together for good? If you think you know of some things that do not work together for the good of the beneficiaries of this wonderful promise, a prayerful study of the following passages will help you to understand.

God sometimes uses extreme opposites "His wonders to perform. The extreme cold of the winter and the heat of the summer make the giant oak. It takes the snow and cold rain of the winter and the warm sunshine of spring and summer to make an abundant wheat harvest.

All Things Work Together for Good: Controversy or Comfort?

These things work "together," not separately. A little baking soda, or plain flour, or table salt, is not very palatable when taken alone. But a good cook can take all these and a few other ingredients and make them all work together, and a most delicious cake is the result. If we love God and live according to his purpose, both the bitter and the sweet of our lives will be woven by the hand of God into "beautiful robes of white.

Index Prior Next. Jesus Christ already knew that all suffering begets a reward. Because Christ humbled himself and remained steadfast despite tribulations, he was exalted by the father. The apostle Paul, through revelation by the holy spirit, said:. And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

He was blameless in the sight of God, and God blessed him immensely.

Yet, even in the face of mental and physical torture, he remained resolute in his faith in God. He endured , remained steadfast, and persevered.

1. "All things work together for good to those who love God": Some examples

He had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen and a thousand donkeys. There are other passages in the bible that further explains what Paul was saying — that the suffering of the righteous will not go unrewarded. Its impossible to live in this wicked world without facing difficulties and temptations. Even Jesus Christ, who was without sin, was tempted by the devil and killed by the Jews.

Therefore, if we pray to have no temptation, then we are praying amiss. Instead, we must pray to God for sufficient grace to overcome all the tricks of the devil. This means, when we are facing difficulties, we pray for strength to remain steadfast in his service. Apostle Peter knew this too. He understood that we must all suffer for the body of Christ.

Through our suffering, we will be called into eternal Glory. Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Trails and temptations are the foundation of this sinful world. James, an apostle of Jesus Christ, is reminding us to remain steadfast for our blessing. This means we must never look back when tempted but remain steadfast and persevere until the end. There is a need to believe in the hope that is set for us that trust in God. This hope is the resurrection and eternal glorification.

While in the holy city, the apostle was falsely accused of defiling the temple by escorting a Gentile into the sacred area which was for Jews exclusively. Paul was arrested and abused. He was subsequently taken to Caesarea where he was imprisoned for two years.

Eventually, he appealed his case to Caesar and, after a harrowing voyage, finally arrived in Rome. For two years he labored under house arrest, awaiting the disposition of his case Acts During his two-year confinement, he continued to proclaim the gospel—quite obviously with considerable success. Some of the details of these days may be learned from incidental references in the books of Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon—which he penned during this two-year span.

It is at this point that we must remind ourselves again that God was not responsible for any of these evils that befell his ambassador to the Gentiles. God did not cause the riot in Jerusalem.

God did not have his apostle thrown into prison. God did not generate the malicious accusations against Paul.

And God did not instill within certain brethren this unconscionable desire to create hardship for Paul in Rome. The perfect tense form suggests an abiding blessing. The word is a compound form consisting of pro toward and kopto to cut.

What Paul is suggesting in this text, therefore, is this: In spite of the fact that many seemingly adverse elements have conspired to deter his ministry, these events have not frustrated the divine plan for dispersing the gospel. Rather, they have actually facilitated the growth of the Christian movement. They worked not for evil, but for good.

How very thrilling are the providential operations of the Almighty. Who can stay his hand? Daniel And so as a sort of summary of this section of our essay, we might ask: how is God working good by means of the heartaches and disappointments that come to us in life?
